XI JINPING SET TO HOST PUTIN AND MODI AT LANDMARK SCO SUMMIT

China is preparing for a high-profile diplomatic gathering as President Xi Jinping welcomes more than 20 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, 2025.

This year’s summit is being described as one of the most symbolic in recent times. It marks Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to China in more than seven years, a development seen as a potential thaw in strained Sino-Indian relations. His presence alongside Putin underscores the SCO’s growing role as a platform for the Global South to assert greater influence in global affairs.

Analysts suggest that the optics of Xi, Putin, and Modi standing together send a powerful message of solidarity at a time when relations between major Asian powers and the West remain tense. The SCO, founded in 2001, has evolved into a key regional bloc, focusing on security, economic cooperation, and counter-terrorism while steadily expanding its global reach.

The 2025 summit agenda is expected to center on energy security, digital economy collaboration, and regional stability, particularly in Central Asia and the Indo-Pacific. With global trade realignments and ongoing geopolitical challenges, the SCO seeks to position itself as a counterweight to Western-led alliances.

For China, the summit is also a chance to showcase its diplomatic leadership and strengthen its image as a bridge-builder among emerging economies. Meanwhile, Russia is expected to push for greater defense and energy partnerships, while India will likely emphasize connectivity, trade, and balanced engagement.

As the world watches Tianjin, the SCO summit could signal a turning point in how Asia navigates its collective future on the global stage.

TRUMP DEPLOYS NATIONAL GUARD TO CHICAGO AMID RISING UNREST In a move that has sparked widespread debate across the United States, President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago. The decision, according to the White House, comes in response to a series of violent protests, vandalism, and reported lawlessness that have gripped parts of the city in recent weeks. Administration officials say the deployment is aimed at restoring peace and protecting federal buildings, businesses, and citizens, but critics argue it marks another instance of federal overreach and political showmanship. The announcement was made late Saturday following a high-level security briefing at the White House. In his statement, Trump emphasized that the federal government “would not sit idly by while chaos and violence undermine public safety.” The president pointed to reports of shootings, looting, and clashes between demonstrators and police as justification ...
