INDIA COURT SENTENCES MAN TO DEATH FOR BURNING WIFE OVER SKIN COLOUR

In a landmark ruling that has drawn national and international attention, a Rajasthan court has sentenced a man to death for the brutal killing of his wife, driven by prejudice against her skin colour. The case, which dates back to 2017, has been described by the court as a “heinous crime against humanity” and categorized under the “rarest of rare” offences.
The victim, identified as Laxmi, had endured repeated humiliation from her husband, Kishanlal, who often mocked her for being “dark and fat.” According to her dying declaration, the abuse escalated into a deadly act when Kishanlal deceived her into applying what he claimed was a fairness medicine. The substance had an acidic smell, and when she resisted, he ignited her with an incense stick and poured more of the chemical on her. Laxmi sustained severe burns and succumbed to her injuries days later.
The prosecution, led by Dinesh Paliwal, presented 14 witnesses and 36 documents to establish the premeditated and cruel nature of the crime. The court concluded that Kishanlal’s actions were not only deliberate but also reflected deep-rooted discrimination based on skin colour—a bias that continues to plague sections of Indian society.
In delivering the death sentence, the court emphasized that such crimes “shake the conscience of society” and demanded the harshest punishment to serve as a deterrent. Women’s rights groups and activists have welcomed the verdict, describing it as a significant step in the fight against both gender-based violence and colorism.
This judgment highlights the urgent need to challenge harmful cultural attitudes tied to complexion, while reinforcing that violence, under any justification, will not be tolerated. It stands as a sobering reminder of the consequences of prejudice and the importance of protecting women’s dignity and human rights.
